Digital Asset Management (DAM) is a business process for organizing, storing and retrieving rich media and managing digital rights and permissions. Rich media assets include photos, music, videos, animations, podcasts, and other multimedia content. DAM involves creating an archive, developing an infrastructure to secure and manage digital assets, and providing a search capability that allows end users to identify, locate, and retrieve an asset. In its simplest form, a DAM consists of a set of database records. Each database record contains metadata that explains the name of the file, its format, and information about its content and usage. Digital asset management software can be used to create and manage the database and help the organization store rich media in a cost-effective manner.

What is a digital asset?

The asset to be managed is stored in a digital format and is described in detail by its metadata. The metadata can describe the asset's content, means of encryption, ownership, and access rights.

Types of Digital Management

There are several major categories of digital asset management. Brand asset management systems usually have marketing related content like logos. Library asset management systems focus on the storage and retrieval of media that rarely change, such as photo archives. Production asset management systems manage assets as they are developed for digital media production such as video games. There is also a cloud-based digital asset management system that allows users to access assets from any device, including mobile phones.

DAM software

While software tools for digital media management were previously used exclusively by publishing and media companies, they are increasingly being integrated into content management systems and are of particular interest to retail companies with customer-oriented websites. DAM is generally regarded as part of Enterprise Content Management (ECM), a business process for organizing text documents, e-mail and spreadsheets.

Advantages of DAM software

The advantages of DAM software are that they can access digital media anytime and anywhere. It is quick to implement, easy to integrate and intuitive.

Use cases

If you want to optimize digital asset workflows, you need a digital asset management system. Marketers can use a DAM system to expand their brands and increase brand consistency. Designers use DAM to streamline their workflows by enabling them to quickly search for files and reuse assets. Sales teams have access to up-to-date materials and resources anytime, anywhere. Agencies use DAM to organize all their creative files and reduce turnaround time. And dealers can streamline their delivery process.
